Yarlung Valley is the home of Tibetan Civilization. The famous Yarlung Tsangpo or the Bhramaputra river flow through this valley.
Legend has it that in this valley, the father monkey and the mother ogress gave birth to six offsprings who gradually multiplied and evolved into the first humans on this highland of Tibet. Later, the first Tsenpo (king) was enthroned in Tibet’s first palace in this valley.
Most of the region is quite fertile, and the first fields were also cultivated here. In the 8th century, the first Buddhist monastery of Tibet called Samye was found on the river’s north side. Many Buddhist masters are trained in this monastery. Today it is one of the main grain production areas of Tibet.
The people of this prefecture are famous for various handicrafts, and the hand made woollen fabric from here is well known all over the Tibetan area.
This is the birthplace of many famous people in Tibet’s history, such as Terdak Lingpa, Yeshe Tsogyal and the fifth Dalia Lama.
