Tsurphu Monastery was found by the first Karmapa Dusum Kyenpa in 1189 at his 80 years of age.  He is one of the students of Gampopa, the main disciple of Milarepa. Tsurphu has located about 80 km in the hills of the north-west of Lhasa.

Tsurphu Monastery is the main monastery of the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism.

Originally the 41st king of Tibet Tri Relpachen uses to stay here in the nine century. Therefore there is a historic stone pillar to mark the place.

Starting from the Time of Dusum Kyenpa, this monastery expands gradually. Later the monastery becomes an important learning and meditation centre. There are the main assembly hall and many other chapels with statues of different Buddhas, Boddhisvasttvas, and Dharma Protectors. Additionally, You can see the various religious relics of successive Karmapa.

When you travel to Tibet. It is recommendable to visit the monastery when you are trying for Acclimatization in Tibet. The Tsurphu Monastery is also the beginning of point for the popular Tsurphu to Yangapachen Trekking route and Tsuphu to Namtso lake trekking in Tibet.

You can visit the monastery either along the Way to Namtso Lake or take a day tour from Lhasa.
