Tedrom Nunnery is a hidden gem of Tibet tourism. It is located just over 5 kilometres northwest of Drigung Monastery.
The nunnery has a powerful hot spring surrounded by majestic rocky mountain considered to conceal great treasure.
In the eighth century, the master Padmasambhava and his spiritual consort Yeshe Tsogyal stayed here in the retreat practice. During which time they have to hide lots of Treasure or Terma.
Terma is spiritual treasures hidden by Guru Rinpoche and Yeshe Tsogyal in the earth and in the minds of disciples to be revealed at the appropriate time by ‘treasure revealers’ or tertöns. It is said many tertöns has come here to reveal those treasure.
Before their visit, this place was occupied by a group of Naga-Demons, who were harming the lives of beings around it. Padmasambhava subdued them all and turned them into a place of bliss and power. Since then, the water of the hot spring, the plants, and the soil of this holy place are believed to have strong curative power.
Over time, many men and women came here to meditate, and countless numbers of patients come to use the natural spring and receive blessings to cure their ailments.
Gradually different masters built temples and lodging for nuns and a guesthouse for the convenience of those coming for the hot spring and pilgrimage.
The Nunnery here is associated with Drigung Monastery but remains largely independent and informal in its organization.
Suppose you are staying here, for international visitors. I want to recommend you stay at the Shambhala Hotel here.
