Namtso Lake is located in the wide grass of Northern Tibetan Highland. It takes a few hours to drive north from Lhasa City. Namtso, in the Tibetan Language, means Sky Lake.  It is the biggest freshwater lake in Tibet, and it lies more than 4,000 metres above sea level.

There is a massive snow mountain called Nyenchen Thanglha, the sacred abode of an important protector god by the same name to the south of the Lake. The lake is considered the residence of his partner, the goddess Dorje Kondrakma. Both of them were appointed as Dharma protectors by Guru Rinpoche, the master Padmasambhava.

There are many caves and small monasteries on the peninsula called Tashi Do island. Here on this peninsula, many masters and Yogis practice meditation. Pilgrims come to circumambulate this holy site. On the lunar sheep year, tens of thousands of pilgrims will gather for a pilgrimage around the entire lake. The trail around the lake takes more than two weeks.

It is believed that just being in this holy place is bliss in itself and offering prayer here is an especially effective way to purify all your sins and strengthen our inner power.
